Help, feedback & FAQ

Where to get help inside Header, how to send a report the team can act on, answers to the questions people ask most, and a table of fixes for common snags.

The Help menu

Everything support-related, in one place
ItemWhat it does
Header Help ⇧⌘/Opens this guide on headernotes.com. With no internet connection, it opens the copy of the guide that ships inside the app.
Get Your First Cited AnswerRestarts a three-step tour: ask a question about your notes, open one of the cited sources under the answer, then accept or reject one AI Review suggestion. If your vault or AI isn't set up yet, it tells you what's missing first.
Show “Get Oriented” ChecklistBrings back the four-step card from your first launch: Open or create a note, Capture a quick thought, Search your vault, See where your notes are saved. Steps you already finished stay ticked.
Keyboard Shortcuts ⌘/A sheet of the main shortcuts. The full list is in Keyboard shortcuts.
How Header Protects Your FilesA plain summary of where files and the search index live, what Header writes inside the vault, how saving and conflicts work, what uses the network, and what diagnostics contain.
What's NewNotes for the version you're running. Beta builds show it once after each update.
Known IssuesCurrent limitations in this build, with a Send Feedback… button.
Report Issue...Writes a support email for you to send from Mail (below).
Join the CommunityOpens the community forum (through headernotes.com/community), where testers talk about bugs and ideas with each other and with the team.
Copy Diagnostic ReportCopies a text report to the clipboard for when support asks for one (below).

Reporting a problem

Help → Report Issue...

The Send Feedback sheet asks for a Topic and a description, and lets you choose what diagnostics to include. Pick a Topic (for example Writing & editing, Sync & iCloud, Slow or frozen, or Idea or request), then fill in Tell us what happened: what went wrong, what you expected, and the steps if you know them. Continue in Mail stays greyed out until you've written something.

Include privacy-safe diagnostics is on to start. It adds app and build details, redacted logs, any freeze Header recorded, and counts about your vault (not its contents). API keys are never included. Under More details and privacy you can also choose:

  • Attach current note or Attach last export file. Note text and export files go in only if you tick these.
  • Allow personal file names and Allow full local paths. Both are off, so names and paths are removed.
  • Review what’s included shows the bundle's contents before anything goes anywhere.

Click Continue in Mail. Header opens a draft in Mail, addressed to support@morrowfieldlabs.com, with the diagnostics attached as a zip. Nothing is sent until you press Send in Mail. If Mail isn't set up, the sheet offers Copy Feedback and Save Diagnostics so you can use another email app.

Try this Header froze while you exported "Q3 client review" to PDF? Choose the topic Slow or frozen, write "Exporting Q3 client review to PDF froze for about 20 seconds", leave diagnostics on, and open Review what’s included to see what the team will get.

Copy Diagnostic Report

Puts a text report on the clipboard: app version and build, macOS, your vault names with shortened paths, the name and location of the open note, counts, settings such as whether cloud AI or Git sync is on, and your global shortcuts. It leaves out note contents, API keys and clipboard contents. Paste it into a reply when support asks.

The Beta pill

In beta builds, a small Beta button in the bottom-right corner of the main window opens a menu with Send Feedback…, Known Issues (with a count), What's New, Copy Debug Summary and Hide for This Session. It steps aside in Focus Mode and while sheets are open.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my notes stored?

In the vault folder you chose, as ordinary Markdown files. Open the folder in Finder and you'll see them. Header also keeps a hidden .header folder in the vault for note history, privacy receipts, starred notes and sidebar state, and a cache of thumbnails.

The search index lives outside the vault, in Header's own Application Support folder. It's derived data: if it ever looks wrong, Rebuild search index in Settings → Privacy & Data makes a fresh one from your files.

Do I need an account?

No account required. Header has no hosted note service, so there's nothing to sign up for. Signing in to GitHub is optional and only matters if you want to back up a vault to GitHub with Git in the download version.

What leaves my Mac?

Writing, saving, search, Graph, Lenses and indexing stay on your Mac. The main things that go out, each only when you use it:

  • Saving a link or loading a remote image: the address goes to that website.
  • Looking up a source (DOI, arXiv and the like): the identifier goes to the lookup service.
  • Cloud AI: only after you turn it on and add a key. Header shows a preview of what will be sent unless you switch that off. See Setting up AI.
  • Web search for Ask Header: only when you turn it on and use it.
  • Git sync (download version): your vault's history goes to the remote you added.
  • Research discovery: only your typed query goes to the search services you turned on.
  • Update checks: download version only, once a day while Check for updates automatically is on, or when you choose Check for Updates…. Nothing from your notes is sent.

Approved cloud sends and research lookups are listed in Privacy Receipts (Settings → Privacy & Data → View Receipts…). More in Trust, safety & privacy.

Do I have to pay for AI?

Header adds no charge on top of AI. You also don't need AI at all: notes, links, search, tasks, exports and Minutes work without it.

When you want AI, you have three routes. Apple Intelligence runs on your Mac where macOS offers it (Apple silicon with macOS 26 or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on). Ollama runs a model you install yourself, with no key. Or you add your own key from OpenAI, Anthropic or Mistral, and that provider bills you for what you use. Settings → Privacy & Data shows how many billed cloud AI calls you've made this month, counted on your Mac.

Can I use my Obsidian vault?

Yes. Choose File → Bring Notes into Header…, pick Obsidian or Markdown folder, then decide how Header should use it:

  • Open as Vault: the files stay where they are and the import doesn't rewrite the folder.
  • Copy into Current Vault: copies land under Imported/ and the originals stay untouched.

Then set Markdown Compatibility to Obsidian-Friendly for that vault (Settings → Editor → Advanced editor options…). It turns on wiki links, aliases, callouts, tags, frontmatter, Mermaid and math. The full walkthrough is in Bring your notes in.

How do I sync between Macs?

Keep the vault in a folder a sync service manages on your Mac, such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. Header reads and writes the Markdown; the service moves it between machines. Two ways Header helps when edits collide:

  • If a note changes on disk while you have unsaved edits, a Changed outside Header bar offers Review Changes, Keep Mine, Use Disk and Save Both. Header won't overwrite the other version on its own.
  • Open Sync Recovery… (Settings → Sync & Backup) lists conflict copies. For a note edited on two devices you can Keep Mine, Keep Other or Apply Merge. Scan for Possible Duplicates looks for OneDrive-style duplicates and changes nothing by itself.

In the download version you can also sync through Git. See Sync & backup.

How do I back up my notes?

Your notes are plain files in one folder, so any backup that includes that folder, such as Time Machine, includes your notes. With history sync on, it also includes the .header folder that holds their history.

For an off-device copy with versions, the download version has File → Back Up Vault with Git…. Add a remote (for example a private GitHub repository) and Header pushes the vault's history there. A private GitHub repository isn't end-to-end encrypted; locked notes stay encrypted.

Where is a note's version history kept?

With Sync note history across your devices on (the default, in Settings → Sync & Backup), history is stored in the vault under .header/history/, so it travels with the vault to your other Macs. Turn it off and history stays only on this Mac. The text of locked notes is never written to history.

To look back, open the note's History in the Note Inspector. Each version can be shown as Rich, Markdown or Changes, and Restore brings it back. See The Note Inspector & history.

Will Rich mode change files I never touched?

Rich mode draws your Markdown with formatting; the file itself stays plain Markdown. Switch to Source mode to see the text exactly as it's stored. The Markdown Compatibility setting never rewrites existing files, and the Rich content settings (table density, callouts, completed tasks and so on) only change how Rich mode draws the note.

If you ever spot a change in a part of a note you didn't edit, open History, choose Changes to see the difference, Restore the earlier version if you need to, and tell the team with Report Issue....

Header won't open

Header needs macOS 14.4 or later. The download from headernotes.com is notarized by Apple, so macOS should open it after a one-time confirmation. If macOS says the app is damaged or can't be checked, delete it, download it again from headernotes.com and drag the new copy to Applications. More in Install, update & first launch.

If Header is running but you can't see its window, closing the window only hid it. Choose Window → Show Main Window, or press ⌃⌥H from any app.

Troubleshooting

What you seeWhat to do
A global shortcut does nothing, or says In UseCheck the badge in Settings → Shortcuts. In Use means another app owns it, Duplicate means another Header shortcut uses it, and Off means it's turned off. Click the shortcut to record a different combination, or choose Reset to Default from its ⋯ menu.
Lock Now shows a message instead of lockingTurn on Require Touch ID or password to open Header in Settings → Privacy & Data.
Export Knowledge Map... is greyed outRun View → Ingest Vault (⇧⌘I) or generate a Mindprint first, so there's a map to export.
Add Meeting Note (⌥N) is greyed outIt only works while Minutes is recording.
Writing Tools or Translate Selection is greyed outSelect some text in the note first.
A file you changed in another app doesn't show upChoose View → Refresh Files (⌥⌘L). If search still looks wrong, use Rebuild search index in Settings → Privacy & Data.
Today shows no calendar eventsCheck Use Calendar in Today and Minutes in Settings → Calendar, then Allow access…, or Open Privacy Settings… if you declined before.
Header didn't stay in Login ItemsOpen System Settings → General → Login Items and allow Header, then try the setting again.
No Git heading in SettingsGit is only in the version downloaded from headernotes.com, not the TestFlight build.
Mail isn't available when reporting an issueUse Copy Feedback and Save Diagnostics, then send them from any email app to support@morrowfieldlabs.com.
Header Help opened a Markdown file instead of the websiteHeader couldn't reach headernotes.com, so it opened the copy inside the app. It's the same guide, possibly a little older.
Still stuck? Use Help → Report Issue... with diagnostics on, or ask in the community forum.
