The lay of the land

Your vault & the window

Header keeps your notes as ordinary Markdown files in a folder you choose. This chapter covers that folder, the sidebar row by row, the panes, and the everyday file chores: making, renaming, moving and deleting notes.

1 Sidebar Today Library Minutes Research Manuscripts Captures Pinned Vaults & Folders Explore 2 Note list All Notes 42 Search All Notes Japan Trip Client kickoff Reading list 3 Editor 4 Note Inspector opens when you ask Properties Navigator History References
The main window: the sidebar, the note list for whatever the sidebar has selected, the editor, and the Note Inspector, which stays closed until you open it. The Note Inspector & history covers that last one.

What a vault is Local

A normal folder of .md files

A vault is a folder on your Mac that Header treats as a notebook. Each note is a Markdown file in that folder or one of its subfolders, so you can open the same files in Finder, another editor, or a backup tool. Folders you make in Header are real folders on disk.

To add a vault, choose File → Add Vault… (⇧⌘O) and pick a folder. The panel has a New Folder button if you want to start fresh, and you can select several folders at once. If you pick something very broad, such as your home folder, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, iCloud Drive or a whole disk, or a folder that is mostly not notes, Header stops and asks before adopting it. Install, update & first launch walks through that prompt.

Find it File → Add Vault… ⇧⌘O · Sidebar → Vaults & Folders → Add Vault…

Several vaults, and Vaults & Folders

One vault active at a time

You can keep more than one vault, say a Work vault and a Personal one. They all appear under Vaults & Folders in the sidebar, but only one is active at a time. The Library rows, Captures, Pinned and the note list all show the active vault. Its name sits at the top of the sidebar.

Click a vault to open its top level in the note list. Click a folder to list the notes inside it, including those in its subfolders, together with any PDFs, Word files and boards stored there. Clicking a folder in another vault switches to that vault. Switching closes the notes you have open, and Header asks first if any of them has unsaved changes.

Right-click a vault for Use This Vault, Browse All Files, Reveal in Finder, Copy Path, Rename Vault…, New File, New Folder, Refresh Files and Remove Vault. Rename Vault… renames the folder itself on disk. Remove Vault only takes the vault out of Header's sidebar; the folder and its files stay where they are.

Right-click a folder for New Note Here, New Folder Here and Pin to Sidebar. To move a note into a folder, drag it from the note list onto the folder.

Find it Sidebar → Vaults & Folders · right-click a vault or folder · View → Refresh Files ⌥⌘L

The sidebar, row by row

Where everything lives

From top to bottom, with the chapter that covers each one:

RowWhat it shows
TodayYour day: schedule, reminders, tasks and the daily note. See Today & daily notes.
LibraryClick the arrow to open its rows:
  • All Notes: every note in the vault.
  • Daily Notes: notes whose folder or file name contains Daily, Journal or Diary, plus notes whose name is a date such as 2026-10-22. A calendar button at the top of the list opens or creates a given day's note.
  • Starred: notes you've starred, with a count.
  • Recent: every note, ordered by the list's sort menu, which is Recently Modified unless you change it.
  • Tags: the Tags browser. See Finding & connecting notes.
  • Boards: your canvases, with a count. See Boards.
MinutesRecording and reviewing meetings. See Minutes.
ResearchOpens to Sources and Reading Room. See Research & the Reading Room.
ManuscriptsLong pieces written in chapters. See Manuscripts.
CapturesInbox holds notes sitting loose at the vault's top level and notes in a folder named Inbox, Captures, Capture Inbox or Clippings. Web Clips and Transcripts appear once the vault has notes with those words in their path (for Transcripts, also "Voice" or "Dictation"). Review Captures opens the review panel. See Capturing ideas.
PinnedFolders you've pinned, each with its note count. While it's empty, Header suggests a few top-level folders to pin with one click.
Vaults & FoldersEvery vault and its folder tree, plus Add Vault….
ExploreThe hub for the deeper tools, described below, with up to three pinned tools listed under it.

The Captures, Pinned and Vaults & Folders headings fold away when you don't need them. The gear at the bottom of the sidebar opens Settings.

Explore

The deeper tools, one click from the sidebar

Click Explore in the sidebar to open a page of cards. At the top is an Ask your vault box that sends a question to Ask Header, then a Mindprint panel. The cards come in three groups:

Understand

Atlas, Graph and Lenses.

Create

Manuscripts, Boards and Research Mode.

Protect & Share

Share Pack and Integrity Check.

Each card has a short status line, for example "Ready · 312 notes indexed", or "Building your index…" while a new vault is first being read. Share Pack says "Needs a Mindprint first" until you have one.

Click the pin on a card to add that tool under Explore in the sidebar. You can pin up to three. Manuscripts, Boards and Research Mode already have sidebar rows, so pinning them doesn't add a second one.

The note list

Sort, preview and gallery

The note list shows whatever the sidebar has selected, with its name and a count at the top. Next to the count are the New Note button (its small menu also has New Canvas) and List Options:

  • Sort: Recently Modified, Created, Recently Opened, Starred First, Title or Folder.
  • View: Show Previews, Hide Previews, Title Only or Gallery. Gallery shows notes as cards, with its own card size and preview options.
  • Only Notes with Images narrows the list to notes that have a picture.

The search field sits under the header. Finding & connecting notes explains it.

Panes, Back and Forward, text size

Shape the window to the task
To do thisUse
Show the sidebar, list and editorView → Show All Panes ⌘1
Hide the sidebar, keep the listView → List and Editor ⌘2
Show only the editorView → Editor Only ⌘3
Go back to the note you had open before, or forward againView → Back ⌘[ · View → Forward ⌘]
Make the editor text bigger or smallerView → Increase Editor Text Size ⌘+ · Decrease Editor Text Size ⌘- · Actual Editor Text Size ⌘0

The same three layouts are on the Pane Layout control in the toolbar. Text size runs from 11 to 32 points; Actual Editor Text Size puts it back to 15. For a distraction-free view with typewriter scrolling, see Focus Mode in Writing & the editor.

New notes, and where they go

Write first, the name follows

Press ⌘N (File → New Note) and start typing. There's no naming step: the note starts as Untitled, and once you move on, the first line you typed becomes its file name. Pressing ⌘N again while an empty Untitled note is waiting in the same folder reopens that one instead of making another.

The new note goes where you're looking in the sidebar, not next to whichever note happens to be open:

Sidebar selectionNew note goes to
A folder (or a pinned folder)That folder
Daily NotesA Daily Notes, Journal or Daily folder if the vault has one
Inbox, Web Clips or TranscriptsThe matching folder (Inbox or Captures; Web Clips; Voice Transcripts, Voice or Transcripts) if the vault has one
All Notes, Starred, Recent or BoardsYour New notes go to setting

When the matching folder doesn't exist, the note goes to the vault's top level. New notes go to offers Vault top level (the default), Inbox folder, or Same folder as the current note. Right-clicking a folder and choosing New Note Here always uses that folder.

Two related commands: File → New Folder ⇧⌘N, and File → New Canvas ⌥⌘N for a board.

Try this Pin a Projects folder, click it in the sidebar, and press ⌘N. Type "Kitchen renovation" on the first line, then click another note. The new file in Projects is now called Kitchen renovation.md.
Find it File → New Note ⌘N · Settings → General → Vault → New notes go to

Tabs and windows

More than one note at a time

Clicking a note replaces the one in the editor. To keep both, right-click the second note and choose Open in New Tab. A tab strip appears once more than one note is open. Each note gets one tab, so the command is greyed out for a note that already has one.

In the tab strip, click the selected tab's title to rename it, or right-click a tab for Open Tab, Rename, Star Note and Move File to Trash. The + at the end makes a new note, following the same rule as ⌘N.

To give a note its own window, open it and choose Move to New Window from the ⋯ menu in the toolbar. That window has its own tabs: drag them to reorder, and right-click one for Pin Tab, Close Tab, Open in New Window and Reveal in Finder. Locked notes are edited in the main window only.

Find it right-click a note → Open in New Tab · ⋯ → Move to New Window

Renaming, moving and deleting notes

Right-click a note, or use the ⋯ menu

Right-click a note in the list for these. Several are also in the ⋯ menu at the top right of an open note, under Note.

CommandWhat it does
Rename Note…Renames the .md file. The note's text isn't changed. If the note has a title: property, the sheet offers Also change the title to this name. If other notes link to it, Header then shows the link updates for you to review and apply.
Duplicate NoteMakes a copy named "… copy" in the same folder and opens it.
Move ToLists recent destinations, Vault Root and your folders, plus Choose Folder… (a searchable list) and New Folder….
Reveal in FinderShows the file in Finder.
Copy Note LinkCopies a link like [[Japan Trip]] to paste into another note.
Star NoteAdds the note to Library → Starred. View → Toggle Starred ⇧⌘B does the same for the open note.
Lock NoteEncrypts the note so it needs Touch ID or your password to open, and keeps its text out of search (search still finds it by title) and out of AI. See Trust, safety & privacy.
Delete Note…Asks, then moves the file to the macOS Trash and closes its tab. You can put it back from the Trash. The open note's version is File → Move Note to Trash ⌘⌫.

Before a note goes to the Trash, Header saves a last copy to its history, which you can read about in The Note Inspector & history. To print, share or export a note, see Writing & the editor.

PDFs, Word files and code files

Not everything in a vault is a note

Folders often hold more than Markdown. Header opens other files by type:

  • PDF and Word files open in Header's own viewers. Highlighting and pulling quotes into notes are covered in Research & the Reading Room.
  • Boards (.canvas files) open in the board editor. See Boards.
  • Text and code files, such as .txt, .json, .yaml, .css, .js, .py or .html, open in a plain code editor with Save and Close buttons and an "Unsaved" marker while you have changes.
  • HTML files also get a Source / Preview switch. The preview runs with JavaScript turned off and doesn't load anything from the internet.
  • Images and videos open in your Mac's default app. Anything else shows a small card with an Open button for the app that owns it and Reveal in Finder.

PDF, Word and board files in a folder have their own right-click menu with Rename File…, Move To and Move to Trash….
