Your day

Today & daily notes

Today is one page for the day ahead: what's on your calendar, which tasks need you, the short list you've picked, and a way to close the day. It's built from the checkboxes in your own notes, and every change it makes is a small, visible edit to a Markdown file. The second half of this chapter covers the daily note itself.

Opening Today

From the sidebar, the keyboard, or another app
  • Click Today (the sun) at the top of the sidebar.
  • Press ⌃⌥D from any app. You can change this shortcut in Settings → Shortcuts.
  • Choose File → Today (⇧⌘D) or Window → Today.
  • Press ⌘K and type “Today”.
  • Open the link header://today from a script, a shortcut or another app.

The page shows the date, a greeting, and the line From your notes on this Mac · no cloud AI. Looking at Today doesn't change anything: it reads your notes and stops there. It reads tasks from ordinary notes only, skipping anything in folders named Templates, Web Clips, Clippings or Archive, and skipping web clips wherever they are. In a very large vault it reads the first 500 notes and says so at the bottom.

Today on a day with something in each section; a section with nothing in it is left out. Hover over a Needs you row to see Today, Later and Drop. The filled star marks the focus.

On a day with nothing scheduled and nothing due, you'll see Nothing needs you today. with a button to open today's note.

Schedule

Calendar events, meeting notes and time blocks

Schedule lists today's calendar events, merged with two things from your vault:

  • Meeting notes dated today. When a meeting note matches a calendar event, they appear as one row.
  • Time blocks: a checkbox in today's note beginning with a time, such as - [ ] 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Lunch with Priya. Header shows it in Schedule instead of treating it as a task.

Click a row that has a note to open it. To see calendar events, Today needs Calendar access. The first time, the Schedule section shows Show today's calendar here. with a Connect Calendar button; that button is the only place Today asks macOS for permission. If access was turned off, the row offers Open System Settings instead. Click the small × to hide the row until Header restarts.

The switch for all of this is Settings → Calendar → Use Calendar in Today and Minutes, on unless you turn it off. Calendar is read on this Mac and never synced. With it off, Today shows no events and never asks.

From Reminders

Your Apple Reminders that are due, alongside your notes

If you keep some to-dos in Apple Reminders, Today can show the ones due today or overdue in a From Reminders section, with the list name and the time (or Today, or Overdue). The section is read-only. Click a reminder to open it in the Reminders app and tick it there.

It's off until you turn on Settings → Calendar → Show Apple Reminders on Today. Turning it on asks macOS for Reminders access; the switch shows Allowed once it's granted.

Needs you

Open tasks with a reason to look at them today

Needs you lists open checkboxes (- [ ]) from your notes that have a fresh reason to ask for your attention. Each row shows the task, the note it's in, and the reason. Up to five appear at once; if there are more, a more link shows the rest.

Reason shownWhy the task is here
Due todayIts due date is today, written as 📅 2026-10-22, [due:: 2026-10-22] or @due(2026-10-22).
Scheduled todayIt has a scheduled date of today: ⏳ 2026-10-22.
Overdue since Oct 20Its due date passed within the last week. Older than that, it moves to Older tasks.
Back from LaterYou put it off with Later, and that day has come.
Unfinished yesterday / Unfinished FridayIt was on your last Today list and wasn't finished or decided when the day ended.
Moved to todayWhen you closed your last day, you chose Tomorrow for it.
Tagged #todayThe task line has #today on it.

Click the circle at the start of a row to mark the task done; Header ticks the checkbox in its note. Hover over a row (or right-click it) for the rest:

  • Today puts it on your Today list.
  • Later hides it until a day you choose. See Later and Drop.
  • Drop marks it [-] in its note, so it stops asking.
  • The right-click menu adds Make This My Focus and a way to open the note.

If the same task is open in several notes, Today shows it once, with “in 3 notes” underneath. Done and Drop change every copy; Today and Later link the first one. If two or more tasks were moved to today when you closed your last day, Add all moved items to Today puts them all on your list at once.

Older tasks

The backlog, kept out of the way until you decide

Tasks that are overdue by more than a week, and tasks flagged #priority, #urgent, ⏫ or 🔺 with no date, don't crowd Needs you. Instead, one quiet line says something like 4 older tasks are overdue or flagged. Click Review to open Older tasks, grouped into Overdue more than a week and Flagged, no date.

Decide about each one with Done, Today, Later or Drop, or select several and use Add to Today, Later until… or Drop Selected… at the bottom. Before a bulk drop, Header tells you how many notes will get [-]. Nothing in this list changes on its own.

The Today list and your focus

What you've decided to do today

The Today section is the list you choose. Add tasks from Needs you with Today, or click Add to Today… to pick any open task from your notes, grouped by note. The list and its count are yours; Header never adds to it without you.

  • Click the circle to mark a task done. The checkbox in its note becomes [x]. Click again to reopen it.
  • Click the star to make a task your focus. There's one focus at a time; it moves to the top of the list in larger type. Click the star again to clear it.
  • When you haven't picked a focus and a task has a strong reason (due or scheduled today, a meeting today, or recently overdue), Header marks it Suggested focus. It's only a suggestion; hover over the label to see why.
  • Right-click a task for Mark Done, Make This My Focus, Later, Drop, Remove from Today and Open Source Note.

If you rename or delete a task in its note, the list can't match it any more. The row says Can't find this in and the note's name, with Open note and Remove. Header doesn't guess at a replacement.

▶ Try this In a note called “Japan trip”, write - [ ] Book the Kyoto ryokan 📅 2026-10-22, using today's date. Open Today: it's in Needs you as Due today. Click Today on its row, then the star. Open today's daily note and you'll see a line - ★ Focus: Book the Kyoto ryokan · [[Japan trip]] under ## Today.

Later and Drop

Two ways to stop a task asking today

Later offers Tomorrow, Next Monday, In Two Weeks or Pick a Date… (choose a day under Bring it back on, then click Move to Later). The task disappears from Today until that day, then comes back marked Back from Later. Its note isn't touched; the decision is recorded in today's daily note.

Drop is for tasks you've decided not to do. Header changes the checkbox to [-] in its note and records the drop in today's daily note, so Today stops asking. If the drop can't be recorded, Header puts the checkbox back.

After any change on Today, a message at the bottom of the page offers Undo for a few seconds.

Close my day

Decide what happens to what's left, in one sheet

At the bottom of the page, beside Closing adds a short record to today's note., click Close my day. The sheet lists what you finished under Done, and each unfinished item under Unfinished with three choices:

  • Tomorrow (the default): it comes back tomorrow in Needs you as Moved to today.
  • Later: pick a date; it stays hidden until then. Its note isn't touched.
  • Drop: the checkbox becomes [-] in its note.

Add a line under Reflection (optional) if you like, then click Close today. Cancel writes nothing and keeps your choices until you come back to it (or quit Header). Once closed, the footer shows a summary such as Closed at 6:12 PM · 3 done · 1 moved to tomorrow.

If you didn't close your last day, a banner offers to close it. On Monday, for example, it says Friday isn't closed yet. with a Close Friday button that closes that day in Friday's note. Today offers this for the most recent list from the past week. Click × to hide the banner until Header restarts. You don't have to close a day at all: unfinished items come back the next day either way, marked Unfinished yesterday (or with the day's name after a weekend).

What Today writes, and what it doesn't Plain files

Every decision is a readable line in your daily note

Today keeps its record under a ## Today heading in today's daily note. If that note doesn't exist yet, Header creates it from your daily template the first time you add, focus, defer or drop something. The list lines are plain bullets with a link back to the task's note; the Closed record names tasks by their text. None of them are checkbox copies, so your tasks aren't duplicated and the note reads fine in any Markdown app:

LineWritten when you…
- Draft the blog post · [[Content plan]]add a task to the Today list
- ★ Focus: Book the Kyoto ryokan · [[Japan trip]]make a task your focus
- Later (until 2026-10-26): Compare the two quotes · [[Kitchen reno]]choose Later
- Dropped: Renew the old domain · [[Admin]]drop a task
### Closed 6:12 PM followed by - Done:, - Tomorrow:, - Later (until …):, - Dropped: and - Reflection: linesclose the day

In the task's own note, Today changes only the checkbox: [ ] to [x] when you mark it done (and back when you reopen it), or to [-] when you drop it. Your own lines under ## Today are left alone. If you've edited one of Header's lines by hand, Today refuses to overwrite it and tells you, rather than guessing. Today doesn't use AI, doesn't create your daily note when you only look at the page, and doesn't move or rename notes.

Personalize greeting…

Your name on the page, kept on this Mac

The ⋯ button at the top right of Today has Refresh Today and Personalize greeting…. In the greeting popover, turn on Personalize the greeting and type a Display name. It's stored only on this Mac, never written into notes or sent to an AI provider.

Daily notes

A daily note is an ordinary Markdown note for one date, such as Daily Notes/2026-10-22.md. Today records its decisions there, quick captures can go there, and you can write in it like any other note.

Open Today's Note

Go straight to today's daily note

Choose File → Open Today's Note (⇧⌥⌘D), click Open today's note at the top of Today, pick Open Today's Note in ⌘K, or open header://daily. If today's note doesn't exist, Header creates it from your daily template first. It never overwrites an existing note, including one that's still downloading from iCloud.

Without a template, a new daily note gets a few properties, the date as its title, links to yesterday's and tomorrow's notes, a Today’s Focus heading and a Notes heading.

To browse past days, open Library → Daily Notes in the sidebar. It lists notes whose path includes Daily, Journal or Diary, and notes whose title is a date.

Where daily notes live, and their template

Follows your Obsidian setup, or your own setting

Header works out where each vault's daily notes go, in this order:

  1. Your own setting for this vault, if you've saved one (below).
  2. The Obsidian Periodic Notes plugin's daily settings, when that plugin is set up in the vault with daily notes turned on.
  3. Obsidian's core Daily notes settings (folder, date format and template), when the vault has them and that plugin isn't turned off.
  4. Otherwise, Header's default: a folder called Daily Notes, 01 Daily Notes, Daily or Journal if you have one, or a new Daily Notes folder, with notes named by date.

So if you came from Obsidian, Header uses the same folder, date format and template you already had. To see or change it, open Settings → General → Today. The Daily notes row shows the folder and date pattern in use and where they came from, for example “(from Obsidian Daily Notes)”. Click Change… to set:

  • Folder: leave it empty for the top of the vault.
  • Date format: YYYY-MM-DD unless you change it. It uses date tokens like YYYY, MM and DD, and slashes make folders, so YYYY/MM/YYYY-MM-DD files each day inside year and month folders.
  • Template: the path of a note to copy for each new day, such as Templates/Daily.md.

The sheet previews today's path before you click Save. Use detected settings removes your setting and goes back to the order above. Your choice is saved inside the vault in .header/daily-notes.json, so it travels with the vault. Today's Note, Today's records and the Daily Note capture destination all use this location.

A template can use {{title}}, {{date}}, {{time}}, {{date:FORMAT}} and {{cursor}} the way Obsidian's templates do, plus {{yesterday}} and {{tomorrow}} for the neighbouring dates. If Header is using its own default location and no template is set, it looks for Daily.md or Daily Note.md in your Templates folder.
